Over an extended period of time, Ciprian Foias has contributed more than fifty papers to our journal
Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum.
These articles, many of them written jointly with B. Sz.-Nagy, laid the foundations of a new branch of Operator Theory and provided deep insight into the nature of Hilbert space contractions.
The Medal was presented to Ciprian Foias at 11:00, October 25, 2000 in the Bolyai Institute.
On this occasion he delivered a lecture ``On the theory of Hilbert space contractions".
