The Bolyai Institute of the University of Szeged is pleased to announce hereby that the Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy Medal for the year 2000has been awarded to

Ciprian Foias, professor of the Indiana University, Bloomington, U.S.A. and Texas A & M University, College Station, U.S.A..

Over an extended period of time, Ciprian Foias has contributed more than fifty papers to our journal Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum. These articles, many of them written jointly with B. Sz.-Nagy, laid the foundations of a new branch of Operator Theory and provided deep insight into the nature of Hilbert space contractions.

The Medal was presented to Ciprian Foias at 11:00, October 25, 2000 in the Bolyai Institute. On this occasion he delivered a lecture ``On the theory of Hilbert space contractions".
